How are people seeking asylum managed in the UK?

People seeking asylum

In 1999  central government decided to disperse asylum seekers across the UK and away from London and the South East.  They did this by contracting with local council's and private companies to provide housing across the UK. People who are seeking asylum who arrive in the UK and who are destitute are dispersed to all regions by the UK Border Agency.

While receiving accommodation and support from UK Border Agency, people who are seeking asylum have no choice about where they live. Asylum seekers cannot claim mainstream welfare benefits including income support and housing benefit.  Those who meet a destitution test are supported by the UK Border Agency.

The full costs of housing and supporting asylum seekers are paid by the UK Border Agency
